Dahlia Al-Habieli is an award-winning scenic designer and passionate educator based in the United States. After serving as Special Visiting Faculty in Scenic Design at the Carnegie Mellon University School of Drama for the 22-23 academic year, she is currently pursuing independent projects. She looks forward to a year of artistic exploration and eventually returning to teaching.
Dahlia was born and raised in Abu Dhabi- a diverse, multicultural city that fostered her love for rich and varied traditions of storytelling. Her childhood in the Middle East, undergraduate experience as an international student, and professional journey in the United States have all reinforced her commitment to the responsibilities of storytellers and arts educators as cultural stewards.
As an artist and collaborator, Dahlia is interested in exploring unlikely connections and using her work to build cultural bridges. She loves collaborating with playwrights on new work, and discovering new possibilities in existing work. She creates performance spaces that are invitations to conversation- evocative, eloquent spaces of possibility for actors, artists, technicians, and audiences.
Recent and upcoming productions include MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING for Playmakers Rep, A SHERLOCK CAROL for Virginia Stage Company, and THE LITTLE MERMAID and DRACULA: A COMEDY OF TERRORS for the Dallas Theater Center. Dahlia won the KCACTF Region II Award for Distinguished Scenic Design for THE CURIOUS INCIDENT OF THE DOG IN THE NIGHTTIME at Albright College in 2020. She has held faculty appointments at Albright College and Wake Forest University, and has given guest lectures and workshops for NYU, Wellesley College, University of Texas-Austin, Binghamton University, Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing Arts, and others.
Dahlia received her MFA in Scenic Design from the Carnegie Mellon University School of Drama and her BA from Wellesley College. She received additional training at the National Theater Institute at the Eugene O'Neill Theater Center, where she continues to serve as the Annual Young Playwrights Conference design mentor.
In her spare time, Dahlia enjoys science fiction novels, getting lost walking in large cities, Scrabble, and sketching in coffee shops.
